One of the most common areas for mould to form is around windows, usually due to leaks that lead to excess moisture buildup. Mould in unhealthy to breathe, especially for children or anyone with a weak immune system or respiratory problems. Here are some tips for dealing with this scourge.
Exposure to tiny mould spores can trigger allergic reactions, causing your body to react with itchy skin, watery eyes, coughing and wheezing, among other symptoms. That’s why it’s smart to limit your contact with these puny pests. Recommended gear includes:
- Rubber gloves
- Protective goggles
- A basic dust mask or respirator
Next stop: decontamination station
Next time you’re at the hardware store, it’s a good idea to pick up a mould control cleaning solution. If you’re looking for a natural alternative to these chemical products, many people swear by white vinegar and soap. Combine a measure of your fungus-fighting fluid with some hot water in a bucket.
Now scrub the contaminated surfaces around your window until you’ve removed the mould. Make sure you have some dry rags on hand for wiping down the treated area.
A similar procedure applies wherever you encounter mould, no matter the colour. It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it!
Keep the mould out
Now that your scrubbing is complete, it’s a good idea to trash those rags to prevent mould spores from spreading to other parts of your home.
Ideally, you should also switch on a dehumidifier to reduce excess dampness, which creates the sort of environment where mould tends to thrive.
You will also need to take steps to ensure that you’ve eliminated the source of moisture that allowed the mould to get out of control in the first place.
Poor caulking and worn-out weather stripping are probably the top causes of mould around window frames. Fill those cracks so that you can avoid future mould growth in the future.
Another way to keep mould from coming back is to disinfect trouble spots regularly, including the basement, bathroom, kitchen and laundry, even if you don’t see or smell any contamination.
Go to the pros
Mould contamination may spread beyond what you can reach with your bucket and rags. Sometimes it spreads between the walls. These cases require professional intervention.
